Until barely a century ago, who would have thought that the faint light reaching Earth under the night sky carried clues to the marvellous secrets of the universe. And yet, the latest findings from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory wiith millions of galaxies, thousands of new asteroids, a 3.2-gigapixel image of the Virgo Cluster stand as proof of what becomes possible when years of global coordination, engineering ingenuity, and scientific curiosity align to build the right instruments.
Makes you wonder what would it take for humankind to come together with the same resolve to build the instrumentation we so badly need here on Earth? To capture and respond to environmental change at the local level. To invest in open-source software that supports population-scale wellbeing. To build tools that help counter disinformation and equip communities with verified knowledge in an age of algorithmic noise. The flourishing of life on Earth is worth the same collective imagination we reserve for the stars.
