Let the clock run long enough, and a human mind eventually falls to the highest standard it holds itself accountable to when no one is watching.
The fall is seldom dramatic. It always starts with a small slack. The problem with that slippery slope is that unless there is an opposing uplifting force within, gravity keeps winning.
And then you are in a pit, and before you know it, you don’t know how to stop digging into it anymore.
