English is a poorer language for not having a word for the facade of normalcy we all put on our faces to go about everyday life, while hiding the storms we fight within.

Some smiles we put are plastic. Some places we show up at, we aren’t present. Some small talks are exhausting. Some relationships we keep alive, aren’t by choice.

There should be one word to capture all of this, since we all are part of this act. No exceptions.

FWIW, the word Prosōpon in ancient Greek stands for the theatrical mask worn by actors. It evolved into the Latin persona, which still carries some of this meaning i.e. the face we present. But it’s lost the burden of concealment in modern usage.
