Rabbit-holing into etymology can be a humbling experience. Take महत्त्वाकांक्षा (mahattva-ākāṃkṣā) — ambition — for example.

The ākāṃkṣā root (kāṅkṣ) carries a sense of yearning with expectation, not just passive desire but an active reaching-toward. This distinguishes ambition from mere icchā (wish) or kāma (desire/want).

That is a hard bar to clear. Most of what we feel as ambition is just desire on steroids. True ambition isn’t wanting something big, it is a pull toward greatness. Honestly, I cannot put a finger on anything in my life that clears that threshold.
